Team Newyorkistan's Fundraiser #2 - A Meeting of the BackSeat Drivers Club
Call it whatever you want - fundraiser, cocktail hour(s), chance to catch up with your friends - it's happening!
Date:  Thursday, June 29, 2006
Time: 7:00pm until they toss us out
Place: Verlaine, a lovely little loungey bar at 110 Rivington Street (between Ludlow and Essex) on the Lower East Side
Who is invited: EVERYONE.
I'm not kidding.  It appears that some of you misunderstood at the last event, thinking, "oh, maybe I shouldn't go, they won't miss me." You were WRONG.  We wanna see all your faces out there at Verlaine on the last Thursday in June, to hang out, wish us well, pass on your travel advice, or just laugh at the freaks lacking the priority of self-preservation that other people seem to have been born with.  We're looking for team Sponsorship at this event, (funds to cover the reasonable team expenses in this expedition) and will have to think up something to make it as worthwhile as the charity donations you all so kindly gave at our last shindig.  All I can say is, every little bit helps. That, and my dad is completely offended at the thought that anyone would donate more to the cause than he would, so I think it sounds like a challenge.  Just sayin.

Help Team Newyorkistan Help Mongolia

This is the deal.  The Mongol Rally, as you have gathered, is a charitable endeavor.  Each team must raise 1,000 GBP in order to participate in the rally (GBP 250 for a non-Mongolian charity, GBP 750 for a Mongolian charity).  The organizers project 200 teams taking part, which means a nearly a half million dollars will be raised in support of a variety of charities.  Hotdamn!

Team Newyorkistan is incredibly proud to announce that with your help, we have raised a staggering $3,350!!!!!!!!!!!!  But why stop there?  New Yorkers like to do it up big, right? So this is the deal.  Every donation made to charity on our behalf gets you a membership in the Team Newyorkistan Backseat Drivers Club.  ("You Can Tell Us What to Do. We Don't Have to Listen, But You Can Tell Us What To Do.")  The Club is coming together at the moment, so if you're interested, let us know.  In the meantime, check out the good work that Mercy Corps does, and please give to them on our behalf.

Sponsoring Team Newyorkistan
Besides your charitable donations, Team Newyorkistan wants your sponsorship.  We're attempting to raise funds to cover the reasonable expenses of this endeavor.  Audrey's practically bought a house with her law school student loans, and Paul's just graduated college.  We'll plaster your company's logo all over our car, slap some advertising up here on the site, or (almost) whatever else your marketing department can come up with.  Cause let me tell you, they ain't giving the medical evacuation insurance away.
Donate to Mercy Corps!

About Mercy Corps, in their own words:

Our charity was founded in 1990 under the name Scottish European Aid in response to the plight of children in Romanian orphanages. In 1992 we expanded our work to Bosnia, to start reconstruction work on houses and vital infrastructure, such as roads, public buildings, electricity and water supplies.

In 1996 we merged with Mercy Corps Europe, becoming the European headquarters for the international Mercy Corps network. This merger helped us to extend our worldwide reach, and work alongside communities in Central and South Asia, Africa and Russia.

As Mercy Corps Scotland, we have managed to help millions more families and individuals. However, our goals and vision to provide people with the just and secure communities which they deserve has never changed.

Our aim is "to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people all over the world build secure, productive and just communities". The need for this work has become increasingly apparent in recent times.

We achieve this goal in three ways:
Development work
Creating a civil society
Emergency relief work

Our projects respond directly to community-identified needs with creative programmes designed according to local culture and economic, social and political realities. These projects include education projects in Eritrea, creating clean water supplies in Tajikistan, rebuilding hospitals in Afghanistan and empowering local organisations in Russia. To find out more about our projects, click on our World programmes.

As part of the Mercy Corps family - an agency with 7 partners around the world - we have wide-ranging experience in over 30 countries worldwide. We pool our resources and knowledge in order to focus on what really matters…creating secure, productive and just communities.

You can donate online to Mercy Corps on our behalf by clicking here! Another great website, www.justgiving.com allows you to donate online to charities, streamlining the process. (Please keep in mind - the website takes donations in GBP, NOT U.S. DOLLARS - the current exchange rate can be found at www.xe.com but you can approximate by saying the pound is worth almost twice what the dollar's at.)

Thanks to all who've donated on our behalf!  (OK - we are missing quite a few names, especially for those people we met for the first time at the fundraiser - please send us an email to add your name - esp. because you're now a member of the BDC)
